HISTORY

The Buck and Ballot Brigade came together for the first time in 1958, at the suggestion of then Congressman H. Allen Smith. Bob Springer served as the first president and under his leadership, documented by an entry in the May, 1959 minutes of what was then the 43rd Assembly District Republican Co-ordinating Committee, Buck and Ballot presented a contribution $900 to the Co-ordinating Committee.

In 1964, at the 6th Annual Meeting and Installation of Officers, Buck and Ballot was officially named the "fundraising" organization in the 43rd Assembly district - perhaps in recognition of the fact that during 1964, the contribution from Buck and Ballot had grown from $900 to just under $3,400.

In 1966, the Buck and Ballot Annual dinner featured US Senator George Murphy, and presented a man by the name of Carlos J. Moorhead as the Republican candidate to succeed retiring Assemblyman Howard J. Thelin.

A lot has happened since those early years. Assemblyman Thelin went on to be a judge; Assemblyman Carlos Moorhead went on to Congress; and both are now retired and we frequently run into both of them at Buck and Ballot events.

Some time in the 1970's the annual "Testimonial Dinner" fundraiser gave way to the annual "Lincoln Dinner," generally in the 2nd week of February, and the annual Summer Party was added to the calendar.

And as we entered the 21st Century, we have made more adjustments, creating a plan to fund a year-round Republican headquarters, sponsor monthly meeting to provide both informational and social settings to promote Republican fellowship to foster raising funds and supporting Republican programs and candidates.

And through it all, from the very beginning, our current boardmember, and "institutional memory," Walt Hunt, has served on almost every Buck and Ballot Board of Directors. He serves as an inspiration to his fellow boardmembers who are generations younger, but share his enthusiasm and interest in the principles of the Republican Party - personal responsibility and less government.

The Buck and Ballot Brigade Board of Directors invites all who are interested to continue to explore our website, attend our events and join us as the financial support for the Republican Party in the Glendale Burbank area.

Membership is open to any Republican who believes in and supports the principles of the Republican Party. Membership is annual and renewable on July 1 of each year. Individual membership dues are $25 per person and $40 for a family.
